Improvements to broadband in South Northamptonshire

Reliable broadband in rural areas continues to be a challenging issue. I am really pleased to see that EE is making improvements in its 4G coverage, and supporting the Shared Rural Network programme.

They have told us that their 4G service is now available across 97% of the geography of South Northamptonshire, and they are planning to deliver a new mast as part of their ongoing investment in 4G in rural areas. EE’s existing infrastructure is enabling them to meet their SRN commitments and deliver substantial coverage improvements without the need to build many new masts.

The first phase of site upgrades under the SRN programme and over the course of 2021, they plan to upgrade a further 3 existing EE masts in South Northamptonshire. They will provide further updates on if they plan investment beyond this in due course.

Many constituents have raised the issue of the impact on the environment and natural landscape, and I am pleased that EE are offering on fair commercial terms, their existing infrastructure with other network operators so that they can meet their own SRN commitments without the need for them to build a large number of new masts.
