Libraries Update

I have been working on behalf of the many residents who have contacted me to ensure that South Northamptonshire retains its vital library services and I would like to provide you with an update on some recent developments.

Northamptonshire County Council (NCC) has decided to pause the current Independent Library process and, whilst I know this may be disappointing news to some, I am reassured that no library closures will take place until this important work is complete. In addition to this, NCC has stated that it is committed to finding a workable solution with community groups to support library provision going forward.

This decision was made on the basis of three key factors. First, the council has issued a second Section 114 notice and as such, significant work must be undertaken to identify priority areas of council spend. Second, NCC believes that more time is required to consider the points raised by community groups and interested parties. And third, the applications received to establish independent libraries require further consideration.

I was pleased to hear that the meetings held between NCC, community groups and other interested parties have been beneficial, and, despite the current period of uncertainty, I remain optimistic that a positive outcome will be reached.
